The specific aims of the canine chiari and syringomyelia research is to
  • investigate the aetiology (causes)
  • identify the phenotypic variations that occur
  • facilitate and provide financial support for MRIs and/or other diagnostic means
  • collect suitable DNA and RNA from the phenotypic variations
  • help to develop a genetic test which identifies carriers
  • devise breeding strategies to reduce or eliminate this devastating condition in affected breeds
 
and in relation to CM and SM in the human and dog to
  • engage and promote research into understanding the underlying molecular and cellular pathogenic mechanisms for better diagnosis,  prognosis and clinical management of the conditions
  • raise awareness to the condition by providing accurate information using a range of media
  • provide support for individuals, groups and organisations involved in the welfare issues of CMSM in dogs and humans
